1. The Capital of Kenya in Nairobi

Nairobi is also Kenya’s largest city. The oldest city in Kenya is Mombasa.

It shares borders with South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda and Tanzania.

3. There are lots of different climates across Kenya

Kenya has a very varied climate. It has cold snowy areas near Mount Kenya, areas with lots of forests and wildlife and also areas which are deserts.

4. Kenya is home to lots of wildlife

Kenya is home to lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos. Lots of these used to be hunted but now there are laws to try and protect them. It is no against the law to hunt protected species.

Endangered species like the white rhino live in Kenya as well as the world’s fastest land animal – the cheetah!

This is probably why it is one of the best places in the world to go on safari.

5. There are 68 different languages spoken in Kenya

There are over 60 languages spoken across Kenya but the official language is Swahili.

The most common way to greet people is to say ‘Jambo!’

6. It had the second highest mountain in Africa

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and second highest mountain in Africa (Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the highest mountain in Africa).

It takes at least 4 days to climb Mount Kenya.

7. Lake Turkana in Kenya is home to a huge flamingo population

Lake Turkana is also the largest lake in Kenya and the world’s largest desert lake.

8. Most people in Kenya work in agriculture (farming and growing crops)

3/4 of people in Kenya work in agriculture. Kenya produces lots of tea and coffee beans which are used all across the world.

9. One of the most common foods is called Ugali

Ugly is a porridge made from maize, which is a type corn. It’s salty and similar to mashed potato but not as smooth. It is eaten with a stew of vegetables and meat.

10. The population of Kenya is over 53 million

This is slightly smaller than the U.K – our population is 67 million.
